In a collaborative project with LXV Books in Bethnal Green, Amber Ablett will be curating an exhibition of book art works on a shelf of the bookshop, to introduce new audiences to art works using the book format. Part two of the project will be exhibiting work by Luke Drozd, an artist and designer based in London. The exhibition will run until the 2nd February 2012. His work explores the use of space and language especially concerned with the reader’s relationship to the book and reading. His work can be seen in collections including the Tate Library, London and UWE Centre for Artist Books.

He used it to demonstrate when how a shift in scientific understanding occurs - a Paradigm Shift - you are made able to see and understand a thing, a phenomenon, a set of data, differently despite the fact that you are still looking at exactly the same thing as before.

An evening of music, sounds and noise performances, alongside a small installation of sculptural works and videos.

Following on from Performativity, where we explored the documentation of performance, its validity, worth, sucess and autonomy- here is the artist Alex Baggaley talking to Ben Tomlinson about how he approaches this in his work, where his performances move into drawings and paintings.

This body of work began as a performance of sorts, how has this

been diluted to contain itself in a sheet of paper with pencil mark-

ings? Do you think the drawings will give the viewer access to your

performance, or does that not matter?

Choosing to do drawings is in some way an admittance that these

experiences can only be felt in the act and not communicated. The

drawings are in no way a consummation of the trips. Mostly they

are an illustration of the lack any representation is capable of

sharing something fully. They can only represent a glimpse.

The choice of using an illustrative style is also to remove them

from any tactile experience - they are strictly visual - although

they do manifest a physical terrain in terms of a scale i.e. each

mark is only the size of a pencil or brush tip and these expand and

conglomerate into a mass describing some feature in a landscape -

accumulating into a density, but that’s just what drawing is.

Alma Enterprises is proud to present a solo show by London based artist Roisin Byrne. It's Not You It's Me is a work that takes this break-up platitude and perversely stands it on its head (1). Taking on the guise of a false collector in order to find out information on a quasi mythical work by Italian artist Roberto Cuoghi, Byrne discovered that the artist himself did not exist. Cuoghi had sought to become his father over 7 years by gaining weight, dying his hair and adopting the lifestyle and mannerisms of a 60 year old man. Byrne became fascinated by his apparent non-existence and that this 'event', always written about as 'not being a work' was what the artist Cuoghi was most renowned for

Byrne's practice humorously yet aggressively challenges the boundaries of how an artist is allowed to behave prodding and provoking to unravel the accepted rules that structure art and its associations with culture, freedom and independence. Her work depicts the shift in art practice in which ideas and information become fluid, a common property which can be invoked, adapted and absorbed, violating the established mechanisms for making art, as well as the status of artwork itself

YOU ARE HUNGRY: GUIDED WALKS OF EDIBLE HACKNEY at [SPACE]

Can you feed the 2,150 urban residents, that live within 500 metres of SPACE, using the 25 hectares of land that houses them?

You Are Hungry is a proposal to investigate this question by taking a walk with Mikey Tomkins and his "Edible Map” as your guide.

The map displays the potential food that could be grown within the immediate streets, parks and grassed areas around SPACE gallery. The walk will pass through the vegetable belt of Sheep Lane, the Vineyards of Pritchard's Road, and the apiaries of Goldsmiths Row.

Each walk last approximately 1 1/2 hours. There are places for five people on each walk. The walks are not lectures but will form part of a discussion about architecture, planning and foods apparent exclusion and potential inclusion. The walks will be audio recorded and with walkers permission used on a web version of the edible map.

Forthcoming Programme

In September 2011 Cell Project Space will launch a new series of five individual solo commissioned projects, CYcLORAMA which will continue into 2012. Supported by The Arts Council of England, the programme aims to challenge the gallery’s position at a pivotel period of an artist’s career. Cell are making the shift to assisting artists’ projects become a reality. Not always creating a finite statement, but to establish the gallery as an exploratory space to develop knowledge that can be used in the future. A CYcLORAMA made for the theatre is a device that represents a physical interpretation of space as a 360 degree view of the sky with the viewer at the centre of it’s expanse. The project takes the aspirations of the theatrical device as a subject for ideas and working methods.

All five projects within CYcLORAMA dramatise the moving-image event to give viewers an active role in which they can construct their own experience and become aware of the elements that have contributed to it. The programme acknowledges the expanded cinema practices of the 1970’s movement, Filmaktion where artists began to explore the potential of presenting moving image breaking down the ‘fourth wall’ convention of cinematic experience by experimenting with the material qualities of film to create immersive and more expansive events. The most axiomatic characteristic of this movement is that artists did not utilise film as a tool to record a narrative but instead explored the formalistic qualities of both the material nature of the medium of film and the various phases of the production process. The evolution of the notion of expanded cinema has been affected not just by the developments in visual art discourse but also through the actual advancements in the equipment available. The transformative speed of technology has affected not just the resources artists can call upon but also the modes of distribution and display and the way the work is consumed. Moving image can be presented in a multitude of modes with the potential to become a more saturated, confrontational or passive experience for the viewer. The work in this unique series will adopt event-based performative practices to varying degrees additionally expanding usual conventions of the moving image production and presentation by incorporating sculpture, installation, cyberspace, and in some cases collaboration to present a mediated and changed point of view. Through multiple types of sensory elements and devices, spectators are forced to think about how they become implicated and destabilised.

Adjunct to the CYcLORAMA project, Cell will host a series of supportive events, under the guise of THE CYcLE CLUB, which will draw together artists, film-makers, researchers, and other interested groups to collectively explore and compare recent and past expanded moving image projects. The programme starts with a solo exhibition by JESSICA WARBOYS, VICTORY PARK TREE PAINTING, which opens 15th September 2011 and LAURA BUCKLEY's SOLO PROJECT opens 12th January 2012, continuing until 26th February, 2012 THE CYcLE CLUB, hosts a short event with gallery intervention by RICHARD BEVAN in November 4th 2011. This show explores the geometry that informs human and artistic expression. The work, in different ways, accesses an alternative language of shape, mark and symbol. It also exposes the measured logic behind the process of making work.
In this show, drawing functions as a primary-making-language. Each work conceives visually of an area of consciousness that exists in the various margins of human experience. We find that it is in the most disordered chaos that order and logic present themselves; and we find the utmost humanity in the most ordered, geometric vision. This humanity exists too in the fundamentality of repetition and the repeated shape; it is the basis of the external image but is also crucial to how we conceive of ourselves and find coherence in our being. Such repetition has a quiet profundity of its own, regardless of initial linguistic or symbolic meaning. It manages to bypass the weight of formalized language and thus reveals something; from infinity to nothing.
This show marks an attempt to locate the very foundations of the image; tracing back to the amoebic beginnings of shape and structure. Most of all, this show is a homage to the artists’ ability to find quiet, measured precision in a plural practise.

COMMENT IN THE INDEPENDENT FROM THE FOUNDER OF KID'S COMPANY, WORKING WITH YOUNG PEOPLE IN LONDON:

Shops looted, cars and buildings burnt out, young adults in hoods on the rampage.

London has woken up to street violence, and the usual narratives have emerged – punish those responsible for the violence because they are "opportunist criminals" and "disgusting thieves". The slightly more intellectually curious might blame the trouble on poor police relations or lack of policing.

My own view is that the police in this country do an impressive job and unjustly carry the consequences of a much wider social dysfunction. Before you take a breath of sarcasm thinking "here she goes, excusing the criminals with some sob story", I want to begin by stating two things. First, violence and looting can never be justified. Second, for those of us working at street level, we're not surprised by these events.

Twitter and Facebook have kept the perverse momentum going, transmitting invitations such as: "Bare shops are gonna get smashed up. So come, get some (free stuff!!!!) F... the feds we will send them back with OUR riot! Dead the ends and colour war for now. So If you see a brother... SALUTE! If you see a fed... SHOOT!"

If this is a war, the enemy, on the face of it, are the "lawless", the defenders are the law-abiding. An absence of morality can easily be found in the rioters and looters. How, we ask, could they attack their own community with such disregard? But the young people would reply "easily", because they feel they don't actually belong to the community. Community, they would say, has nothing to offer them. Instead, for years they have experienced themselves cut adrift from civil society's legitimate structures. Society relies on collaborative behaviour; individuals are held accountable because belonging brings personal benefit. Fear or shame of being alienated keeps most of us pro-social.

Working at street level in London, over a number of years, many of us have been concerned about large groups of young adults creating their own parallel antisocial communities with different rules. The individual is responsible for their own survival because the established community is perceived to provide nothing. Acquisition of goods through violence is justified in neighbourhoods where the notion of dog eat dog pervades and the top dog survives the best. The drug economy facilitates a parallel subculture with the drug dealer producing more fiscally efficient solutions than the social care agencies who are too under-resourced to compete.

The insidious flourishing of anti-establishment attitudes is paradoxically helped by the establishment. It grows when a child is dragged by their mother to social services screaming for help and security guards remove both; or in the shiny academies which, quietly, rid themselves of the most disturbed kids. Walk into the mental hospitals and there is nothing for the patients to do except peel the wallpaper. Go to the youth centre and you will find the staff have locked themselves up in the office because disturbed young men are dominating the space with their violent dogs. Walk on the estate stairwells with your baby in a buggy manoeuvring past the condoms, the needles, into the lift where the best outcome is that you will survive the urine stench and the worst is that you will be raped. The border police arrive at the neighbour's door to grab an "over-stayer" and his kids are screaming. British children with no legal papers have mothers surviving through prostitution and still there's not enough food on the table.

It's not one occasional attack on dignity, it's a repeated humiliation, being continuously dispossessed in a society rich with possession. Young, intelligent citizens of the ghetto seek an explanation for why they are at the receiving end of bleak Britain, condemned to a darkness where their humanity is not even valued enough to be helped. Savagery is a possibility within us all. Some of us have been lucky enough not to have to call upon it for survival; others, exhausted from failure, can justify resorting to it.

Our leaders still speak about how protecting the community is vital. The trouble is, the deal has gone sour. The community has selected who is worthy of help and who is not. In this false moral economy where the poor are described as dysfunctional, the community fails. One dimension of this failure is being acted out in the riots; the lawlessness is, suddenly, there for all to see. Less visible is the perverse insidious violence delivered through legitimate societal structures. Check out the price of failing to care.

I got a call yesterday morning. The kids gave me a run-down of what had happened in Brixton. A street party had been invaded by a group of young men out to grab. A few years ago, the kids who called me would have joined in, because they had nothing to lose. One had been permanently excluded from six schools. When he first arrived at Kids Company he cared so little that he would smash his head into a pane of glass and bite his own flesh off with rage. He'd think nothing of hurting others. After intensive social care and support he walked away when the riots began because he held more value in his membership of a community that has embraced him than a community that demanded his dark side.

It costs money to care. But it also costs money to clear up riots, savagery and antisocial behaviour. I leave it to you to do the financial and moral sums.

Nobuhiko Obayahi (1977, 87mins)

Nothing can quite prepare an audience for a screening of Nobuhiko Obayahi’s Hausu (or in English, ‘House’). It is, to put it simply, quite unlike anything else in cinema (or anything else for that matter). The hallucinatory tale of a group of girls spending their summer holidays in a house where nothing is quite what it seems is part fairy tale, part slapstick and part acid-soaked nightmare. To say anymore could jeopardize the profoundly startling effect this glimpse into a world full of madness can have. But let it be known that celluloid fantasy rarely goes this deep or this demented; when it does it pulls the viewer to the very edge – Hausu is one such film.

This weekend is the last chance to see RAIN before CELL closes for the summer.

RAIN is an exhibition curated by Nicolas Deshayes that addresses the material slippage between public and intimate experiences of collective space. Exploring the production of display and the sensuality of its potential erosion, many of the pieces ambiguously break down the materiality of presentation structures associated with the designed environment. For this exhibition, Deshayes chooses to disperse the works in the exhibition space, proposing a stylized hang symbolic of the notion of precipitation. A precipitation that is interpreted metaphorically as examining the excess of technological diffusion - of imagery and surface - in the grander scheme of consumer culture. The works brought together are made primarily from what Deshayes calls ‘public’ materials - ephemera of the everyday - such as glass, plastic and aluminium. The wetness and sheen of these materials become desire-inducing signifiers for a type of processed industrial ‘nowness’ that links to all of the works on show.

Soon to be a student again at Camberwell School of Art and Design, half of [Details] traveled South for nerve-racking but successful interview and visiting The South London Gallery for the first time:

New York-based British artist Paul Etienne Lincoln’s work is inspired by historical figures, memory and sensorial perception. Usually realised in elaborate, allegorical installations, it is often produced as the culmination of extensive periods of research, combining the culture, nature and society of specific places.

This solo exhibition introduces the artist’s idiosyncratic output through eight printed Explications, some of which have never been shown before, alongside models of large-scale projects and the film work The Velocity of Thought (2006).

At the heart of Lincoln’s exhibition is an intricate scale model and Explicationof a proposal he made in 2006 for a temporary work entitled An Aurelian Labyrinth for the SLG’s Fox Garden. Interweaving elements of local history and ecology with reference to Michael Faraday, baroque music and the Camberwell Beauty butterfly, Lincoln proposed a complex system of music, botany and a mechanical pansy cutter, triggered each day by a JS Bach score, its blades creating a labyrinth in a bed of genetically modified pansies.

Exhibition closes 18th September.

One of the distinguishing elements of live art and performance is the creation of a tangible relationship between the artist and audience. Video, photography, text and sound are some of the mediums that artists may use in order to document and archive performance, often for future reference.

Performativity will question the position of documentation and whether it can be seen as a piece of work in its own right; are these items of documentation defined by being documents or are they are able to escape this classification? The exhibition will look at and compare how our experiences of live art differ when we witness it in different ways. This relationship will be explored and considered through a variety of artworks, which use performance and live art as their starting point, looking at the documentation of performance and the products of performance.

By experiencing live art through documentation our interaction with it is altered; in some cases ‘documentation’ may not even be the correct term to use, as often the article we are looking at is the evidence of a past event. These items then, are part of the event, a product for us to relate to, allowing us to be part of a past that we did not experience first hand. The exhibition includes artists whose practice will challenge the viewer to consider the different experiences of performance through the varied ways the artists have chosen to present their works and what they choose to deliver.

The camera holds an integral position in Performativity; artists will use the camera as a means for documentation, as a viewfinder and as part of the performances itself, as an extension of the artist and a tool for making work. The relationship between performance art and the camera has always been interchangeable and the camera holds a certain responsibility when discussing performance. Chris Burden’s eminent performance Shoot is more commonly recognized and referred to through the documented photograph. Burden would only invite small audiences to watch his performances, if anyone at all, making the first hand experience more sacred through its exclusivity:

‘These events became word-of-mouth sensation…Burden’s performances…the fact that almost nobody saw them, except by way of documentation.’

Documentation is often seen as secondary to seeing a performance first hand; some artists choose not to document their performance at all, wanting it to only exist in the moment. For others it is vital for a record to be made otherwise it will be lost or it will only exist as an intangible memory. Performance can also be a means with which to create a piece of work, as a tool to produce a video or an installation. Laurie Lax’s Video Fixations are drawn documents of a video which in itself documents a journey and so call us to question where the boundary of performance falls with this work; is it the journey, the act of recording it or putting pencil to paper to recreate moments of it?

‘Both time-based media and performance are therefore mediums in which individual works are often replicated, migrated, or emulated in order to ensure their continued existence.’

Performativity includes artists based in four cities - Bristol, Leeds, Liverpool and Birmingham and the works make reference to the artist’s location and local culture. Location and venue are essential to ideas surrounding live art; a one off performance will happen in one place, at one time and it is probable that the performance will be affected and altered by the immediate surroundings. The exhibition presents site and location specific works, within landscapes or cities, presenting personal experiences and representations for the audience to engage with.

Talking about her work, Fish Possible (wobble) ‘Filming projection without tripod whilst breathing’, Joanne Masding describes her relationship with documentation:

‘I’m very interested in the use of documentation as a means of validating the original event rather than merely recording it, and how events or actions are often viewed through some means other than eyes, such as a camera, which means that at the time it is thought of as a past thing that can be re-experienced, rather than being so aware of it in the present.’

Experiencing the artworks exhibited and the remnants of performance within the space will allow the audience to take on different positions – not only as a first or second hand experience but also taking on the role of the performer, the documenter, the audience or the distant observer.

Performativity will involve the audience in the relationships and experiences of live art rather than viewing the art as an immobile representation. The opening night will include performances from Alice Vandeleur-Boorer and Karina Banks so that the experiences of the live act and the work that they choose to leave behind can be compared, which will be exhibited alongside work from Black Dogs, Laurence Payot, Tim Stock, Joanne Masding and Laurie Lax whose work highlights the inconstant relationship between live art and the audience in different ways.

Live art and performance have been used to immediately engage the audience and film, and the photograph before it, have been used to document this first hand happening. However, the experience of seeing it again through a video or image separates the viewer and the work and completely alters their interaction with it. It demands that the audience takes a more passive role. This exhibition will bring together the work of artists who challenge these constraints to use the camera as a view finder to create a first hand experience for the audience.

Through out 2011, [DoR] will be holding a series of group crits for artists. The crits will be an opportunity for artists outside of education to discuss their work and practice to help maintain and encourage development and to be involved in regular critical analysis of their work. Work can be in any medium; sculpture; painting; video; drawing; performance.

We are now accepting proposals for the first workshop, which will be taking place on the 2^nd April in Broadway Market, E9. The workshop will run from 10am to 4pm and artists need to be available for the whole of the day; each artist will be allocated approximately 45 minutes to discuss their work within the group.

Submitted proposals should include a brief description of your practice and an outline of why you wish to take part in the workshop. Time based work should not exceed 10 minutes to allow enough time for discussion. If work is in any other format all equipment must be supplied by the artist, i.e. computer, projector.

AIRIMAGES/ DETAILS COLLABORATION

A couple of weeks ago, [Details on Request] were invited by the fashion/art/photography group, Airimages, to take part in a collaborative project. Using religious imagery as our starting point we create 3 tableaux of images: medieval statuettes; gothic and Latin religious shrines.

The day was great fun and we learnt a lot about how a photography shoot is put together- many thanks to Jaime, Bettina and Maria!

The images will be displayed as part of out upcoming On line Exhibition Launch- more details to follow.

WOLFGANG TILLMANS LECTURE

Wolfgang Tillmans’ comprehensive and diverse body of work is distinguished not only by an attentive and insightful observation of his surroundings but also by an on-going, systematic investigation of the photographic medium’s foundations. Winner of numerous prizes, including the Turner Prize in 2000, Tillmans' works have been the subject of major international exhibitions and are represented in private collections and public museums internationally. Tillmans was born in Remscheid, Germany in 1968. He lives and works in London and Berlin.

ADIDAS DIESEL LAUNCH

Last night [DoR] and [DoR] collaborator Stephany Pollard were invited to the launch night of a new collaboration between Adidas and Diesel (Thanks to FolkinGoodMgmt). We were treated to great music by DELS, Teeth!!! and Lou & Nova and some delicious rum and ginger beer to wash the music down.

MODERN BRITISH SCULPTURE AT THE ROYAL ACADEMY

The first room of the exhibition has no sculpture on show, however it is dominated by a towering eight meter high model of the Cenotaph, designed by Edwin Lutyens, the curators offer the Cenotaph as the first 'sculpture', suggesting that perhaps it was the first act of minimalist sculpture. The Cenotaph is surrounded by Jacob Epstein's Cycle of Life, the room is titled Monumentalising Life and Death.

The exhibition then leads you through a room full of pieces loaned from the British Museum and the V&A, a varied collection of sculptures displaying traditional techniques and the importance of 'truth to materials'.

The galleries that follow exhibit works such as Jacob Epstein's Adam, a dominating sexually masculine piece that demands complete attention.

Other stand out works included Alfred Gilbert's Jubilee Monument to Queen Victoria, his sculpture is lavish and gaudy. Queen Victoria sits in the gallery with three other sculptures, all made by one time presidents of The Academy, Frederic Lord Leighton, Charles Wheeler and Phillip King.

Barbara Hepworth and Henry Moore fill a gallery with two large works, this room leads to the galleries Environmental Construction and Early One Morning. From here you enter a gallery challenging conventional sculpture and referencing british landscape including works by Richard Long and Carl Andre.

In one of the final galleries Jeff Koon's vitrine, covered in dust and not quite straight, stands opposite Damien Hirst's Let's Eat Outdoors Today, mirroring certain similarities including cubic form, Hirst's installation makes reference to british social class and behavior. Unfortunately the scene presented within the vitrine was impaired by the lack of attention to detail, it was obvious that elements of the piece were fabricated - the flies were not feeding off the decapitating cows head nor the left over meat on the barbec

ue, they were in fact eating from petri dishes placed on the ground. The fly killer was also not switched on the day we visited.

Urs Fischer's sculpture hanging overhead echoed Koon's suspended object and mirrored the supposed decay occurring in Hirst's piece.

One of the final works I found the most engaging was a film about Richard Wentworth's photographic practice, Making Do and Getting By. A series of photographs depicting placements of objects he has come across accidentally - cups holding open windows, ladders blocking doorways, 'My work comes from chance encounter'.

I felt, with the exception of a handful of works, the exhibition was a huge disappointment. You expect The Academy to be one of the leading environments to view art. It really did seem that the curators had to pull this exhibition together with anything they could get their hands on, it was quite obvious that they had to make do with what they were lent, it seemed it wasn't conciuosly chosen. It was not a strong collection of works for such a major show and we all wonder where some of our great bristsh sculptors were.

BOW ARTS TRUST- NUNNERY GALLERY - APOCALYPSTICK

Dear friend and talented artist of [DoR], Sinta Tantra will be showing work in the group show at the Nunnery Gallery at the Bow Arts Trust, opening tomorrow night.

Although we are yet to see her work in the flesh, we know that the way in which Sinta works subverts our ideas of paintings, making a visual environment rather than a static object - her work is both vibrant and overwhelming and we look forward to seeing it within the Nunnery Setting in an exhibition which explores colour:

"Colour has long been associated with the wild, primal and the feminine, as well as being considered intuitive, instinctive and against logic. Encompassing a spectrum from the childlike and playful, through to the disturbing and sinister, the work in the show operates on a sliding scale of chaos and sensory disquiet. Pigment and hue is not only a formal element but a psychological one, with colour employed as a metaphor for seduction and intoxication. A radical colour key often refers to a skewed reality, symbolising a loss of control, a sensory overload.

Influenced by our everyday experiences of lurid popular culture, these artists appropriate languages from the ever-morphing multi-media world to produce work that is often overloaded with information. Here, vibrant hues attract and simultaneously repel. The Twentieth Century saw vivid colour move from associations with bejeweled opulence, religion and power to the tasteless tackiness of advertising, television and high street fashion. Resplendent in the neon and plastics of contemporary consumer culture, synthetic colours changed the face of the landscape whilst technicolour cinema and fractal, glowing computer graphics altered perceptions and imaginations. Trash was colourful, and colour became trash.

When bright colours are introduced, the work automatically changes in meaning — colour skews reality and images and objects become more appealing, more sensuous or more repulsive. Apocalypstick unites artists who are unashamed chromophiles, in a gleefully grotesque mardi-gras of pigment, plastic and optical chaos.

TOMORROW AT WATERSIDE PROJECT SPACE

Responding to the structures created in I Will Eat This Sleepy Town by Marcin Dudek and Ben Washintgon, réaltympanica will create a sonic journey through the gallery. Visitors will be invited to pick up a pair of headphones, enter the gallery and experience the unexpected audio-material matches with the physical space of the installation.

ALPTRAUM AT CELL PROJECT SPACE

Last Friday [DoR] attended the private view of Alptraum, a touring artist led project. Starting in Washington DC, the exhibtion will travel across the globe to Cell Project Space, London, touring to Berlin in March/April 2011, Los Angeles, in May/June 2011 and 'blank projects', Cape Town, August 2011.

The event was well attended with live music from Berlin based hard phych rock band, The B-Men and Cackle, a prog group from L.A.

The artists exhibiting were invited to submit a piece of work demonstrating physical gesture, hand made quality and personal mark making. Many of the artists would not be used to making work in this way, it would not be part of their usual artistic practice, but the theme allows a more traditional or innocent process of developing work.

The project explores and draws on communication between artists and develops a dialogue across disciplines, subjects and cultures, creating a collective of personal experience.

HOLDING NOTHING, BRUNO HUMBERTO AT GUEST PROJECTS W ORCHESTRA ELASTIQUE

A week or two ago but still fresh in memory, [DoR] went to see Bruno Humberto's performance of Holding Nothing at Yinka Shonibare's space on Regent's Canal.

It was a spectacular performance, deeply involving and moving. With the audience sat in a circle Humberto used the space around them, or the edge of the circle, rarely entering the centre meaning that the viewer had to actively look rather than passively watch his performance. Using sound (drums, accordion, drum kit) to create loops, over-trod by the sound of his footsteps in the dark, his performance drew to mind religious rituals and as the performance continued the audience was left sharing in the performers feelings of desperation and frenzy.

Following this was a performance by the "improvisation collective" Orchestra Elastique- a completely absorbing and fascinating performance where we couldn't draw our eyes away from the tinkering and sound making going on on stage. The kind of music that hypnotizes you into moving along with it, without even realising.

THE LONDON ART FAIR

Last night [DoR] attended the preview of The London Fair. Last year co-founder of [DoR], Amber Ablett exhibited work in Print Now at BEARSPACE. This year the Arts Projects area of the fair seemed smaller but as innovative, although the sparkling wine made the experience all more bearable.

Art Projects has now been a major part of London Art Fair for six years. In 2010 we expanded into a new space and this year will be our biggest ever with 31 galleries featuring emerging artists and new work. Established as one of the most exciting sections of the Fair, it features solo shows, curated group displays and large-scale installations with galleries from across the world.

The fair, as ever, was extremely busy and it was difficult to take any serious notice of the art through the mayhem of people. I did however very much enjoy attending the charity auction hosted by Christie's on the top level of the fair. There was quite an amount of money being spent, unfortunately not be me.

Sisters Burn, residing at Sassoon Gallery, are delighted to announce the launch of their 2011 program with The Immortal. The installation brings together artists Charles Drinkwater, Una Savic and Kyle Zeto in their first ever collaboration. Abandoning their own particular practices, the artists have worked to combine their thoughts and talents in a singular installation for Sassoon Gallery.

The root of The Immortal is R.S. Fitter’s book London’s Natural History. Published in 1945, the book documents the impact of wartime bombing on urban flora and fauna, and highlights the dispersion of otherwise rare or foreign plants and the resurgence of plants affected directly by the bombings. As part of the numerous appendices in the book, a catalogue of the plants found amongst the bombsites in London is included in a typically nonchalant manner befitting an ecological study. Amongst the list are plants with evocative names like Gallant Soldiers, Senecio Squalidus and Many-Seeded Goosefoot. In hindsight, the cataloguing of these opportunist bomb-site plants evokes a certain gravity. The plants are forgotten and ethereal memorials; to physical destruction, historic events and of our understanding of these past moments.

It is the potential of these subtle and overlooked memorials that artists Charles Drinkwater, Una Savic and Kyle Zeto have chosen to explore in their collaborative installation The Immortal. Consisting of video and installation, the exhibition comprises of a film set, a consciously considered and constructed installation within the gallery alongside a real-time presentation of the set itself. Encompassing the names of these plants, and with Zeto’s mask construction as sentinel, and reminiscent in form of monumental memorial structure, the installation is a temporary construction, impermanent and allusive, though rendered permanent and formal through transmission. Creating a cyclical loop between real time experience and filmic representation, The Immortal blurs the lines between how we conceive of and appreciate our past, and present.

The Immortal is a physical representation of the act of memorializing, and an illumination of our relationship to these constructions; be they temporary and fleeting, or permanent in stone.

I WILL EAT THIS SLEEPY TOWN AT WATERSIDE PROJECT SPACE

Last week [DoR] attended the Private View of I Will Eat This Sleepy Town at Waterside Project Space. In the main gallery space Marcin Dudek created a large scale site specific installation you must navigate through. The exhibition consist of works by both Marcin Dudek and Ben Washington. This exhibition is highly recommended.

What we call ‘progress’ doesn’t necessarily take the direction we expect. Sometimes, in an attempt to ‘modernize’, the march of society pulls the rug from beneath our feet.

In their two-man exhibition, Marcin Dudek and Ben Washington create parallel large-scale installations. Both artists pick up on the need to ‘push forward’, the need to dig or climb, but also the dangers of being swallowed up or lost in the clouds.

Marcin Dudek’s work takes as its inspiration the town of Katowice in Polish Silesia – in the 1970s, a model industrial city, with high-rise architecture springing up from the work of the coalmines underneath. Excessive exploitation (or over-mining) undermined this success story, and the ground has opened up, slowly swallowing the city. Using little more than cellophane and tape, Dudek’s tunnel installation leads us into the hollows of the earth, with traps of light, sound and video.

Ben Washington’s sculptures – precarious, unbalanced objects – emerge from the sink-holes and the rubble. Suspended underneath, Washington’s works bring attention to the structures and systems that keep our environments and landscapes in the orientation we have become accustomed to: the right way up. The sculptures are at once architectural models, abstract mountainscapes, floating cities and stellar systems, and bring together the Monolith, video games, and holiday snaps from Costa del Sol.

This underground utopia - a cross between the nuclear shelter and the hanging gardens - allows us to inhabit the man-made and the natural at the same time. From here, in the safety of the infra-thin, we can touch the spaces not just in the physical, but also in the emotional and psycho-geographic.

WHIRLY GIG CINEMA AT RICH MIX

It is only a tiny smattering of days until we return to the Rich Mix and continue our collaboration with the alluring and fantabulous Cabinet of Living Cinema. The concept: we provide an awesome programme of short films and The Cabinet rescore them. Live! And for most of the films, no one except the band will have heard the new scores before. To top it off, this time we are part of the deeply cool and edgy London Short Film Festival.

We will have an even bigger variety of films than ever; to tie in with the festival, the majority are by filmmakers whose work as been a part of LSFF in past (and present) years. Max Hattler, The Astburys, Sophie Windsor Clive, Magali Charrier, Kiron Hussain, Bella Fenning and Kayla Parker have all contributed to the festival, and we can't wait to show their work in a new light.

We also welcome back Tom Chick, Beatrice Baumgartner, Lesley Butler and Ioli Zalimoglou, whose work we showed in December. Don't necessarily expect a repeat of last time though; The Cabinet work in mysterious ways and who knows what they might come up with this time round!

BALFRON PROJECT- BOW ARTS TRUST

Not only did [DoR] take part in photographing event (a really fun evening to get the community together) but on Thursday we went along to the Bow Arts Trust to see the final photograph- beautifully displayed in the Nunnery- the photograph was lit like an ancient shrine at the end of the tunnel like, cavernous gallery.

At 27 stories high, Balfron Tower looms rather imperiously on the periphery of the city, an imposing and somewhat sinister gatekeeper to the sprawling metropolis. Designed by the renowned architect Ernő Goldfinger in 1963, the Grade II listed tower block has previously been used as both a setting and subject, often being included as the means to a post-apocalyptic end. Its dystopic influence can be felt in JG Ballard’s novel Highrise (1975), flashes of the tower in shades of scarlet rage set the scene for the Oasis music video Morning Glory (1995) and it also features in the British horror film 28 Days Later (2002) that depicts a society in a state of catastrophic collapse.

Conceived by artist Simon Terrill, this project does not seek to fictionalise nor expose the lives of those who call the tower home. What The Balfron Project has done, for the first time since the building’s inception, is to generate an arena for reciprocal viewing. For one hour in November, a camera was focused on the tower and the current residents of Balfron Tower were invited to be in the picture, in the manner of their choosing. Film lights illuminated the building as people crowded onto their balconies and improvised performances on the grounds below in time for the designated sound cue that was used to announce the next shot. In this representation of the Balfron Tower, it was the role of the character to compose the subject.

The Balfron Tower is the latest production in Simon Terrill’s ongoing series of photographic performance events exploring ideas of community and the nature of crowds. The final mural-sized photograph features in the exhibition alongside related works and documentary footage by Ollie Harrop and Tim Bowditch.
